"PNSol's solution solves all of these issues ... due to lack of QoS, by simply extracting the maximum possible value from a broadband connection, rather than over-provisioning the network which often requires massive capital expenditure."
– Martin Geddes of STL Partners and Telco 2.0
Predictable Network Solutions and U4EA Technologies Create the World's First Assured Broadband Service
Bi-Directional Assured Services over Existing ADSL Networks Ensure Broadband Performance Is Delivered to End Users
BRISTOL, UK – April 29, 2008 – Predictable Network Solutions (PNSol), U4EA Technologies (U4EA) and Murphx Innovative Solutions (Murphx) have teamed to demonstrate the world's first Assured Broadband Service at SOFNET 2008 in London, UK. The demonstration will showcase videophone services co-existing with other demanding applications, such as iPlayer, using a standard 256k/2M ADSL tail. Visitors to SOFNET can view the demonstration April 28 -29 at U4EA booth #4009 inside Olympia's National Hall.
PNSol's Contention Management (CM) solution is embedded within Murphx's IPStream network offering. This centrally located CM solution works with U4EA's Fusion 210 Multi-service Business Gateway to deliver bi-directional assured services. U4EA's Fusion 210 is an all-in-one device that delivers secure, wire-speed performance and reliable multi-service support for converged networks. Its revolutionary QoS technology (GoS™) enables businesses to maximize high utilization of network access bandwidth, while guaranteeing quality for critical real-time traffic such as voice or video calls, streaming media, and higher priority data traffic.
PNSol conducted a detailed analysis of BT's IPStream, and determined that the emergent operational properties of such a network, when properly managed, would permit the creation of multiple bi-directional assured services, provided the contention of the traffic flows were effectively managed.
"PNSol's solution solves all of these issues including cost inflation, unpredictable user behaviour and revenue stagnation due to lack of QoS, by simply extracting the maximum possible value from a broadband connection, rather than over-provisioning the network which often requires massive capital expenditure," said Martin Geddes of STL Partners and Telco 2.0. "It doesn’t miraculously create new capacity, but enables you to squeeze every bit of value out of what you have."
The Contention Management solution works on three principles:
1 – Determining the underlying emergent operational properties for the host network. Throughput, packet loss, delay and jitter are characterised for all load levels, thus quantifying the limits on the total 'quality bandwidth' available.
2 – Calculating the end-to-end quality requirements to deliver an acceptable user experience for selected applications such as VoIP, video telephony, and peer-to-peer applications.
3 – Using CM to combine the network traffic so that the users' experiences are assured.
This demonstration has particular relevance to the net-neutrality debate. It means that users of a CM-based network could choose what services should get what quality on their broadband connection within the physical limits of their provisioned line. For ISPs, deploying a CM network permits the slicing and dicing of quality by application. This capability will change how broadband is marketed and consumed, converting broadband from a best endeavour service to a bi-directional assured service.
About Predictable Network Solutions (PNSol)
PNSol have created a quantitative mathematical understanding of end-to-end network Quality of Service (QoS), including U4EA's GoS mechanisms, and use that understanding to educate and advise developers, builders and managers in the construction of networks and distributed systems so that predictable application performance can be delivered to end-users.
PNSol have invented and built a Contention Management service which, in addition to helping ISPs manage their bandwidth and capital expenditure costs, allows ISPs to transform their best endeavour broadband service into a bi-directional set of assured services.
About U4EA Technologies
U4EA Technologies is a leading provider of multi-service business gateways that enable service providers to deploy highly integrated, robust, and easy-to-manage IP communications solutions to SMB and enterprise customers. U4EA's all-in-one customer premises devices, supported by the company’s revolutionary QoS (GoS) mechanisms, ensure the secure, reliable and cost-effective delivery of converged VoIP, data and video services. The U4EA Fusion Series also includes next generation network signaling gateways, which enable carriers to interconnect legacy networks and equipment with Next Generation Networks.
